Top Networking Tips

I have been busy exploring the networking communities around me and in London and I have been encouraging myself to do this with intention and purpose.

All too easy to just go for a lovely latte and a chat….but NO…I have been going with a view to joining a few and participating in some events so my intention was to research, gain connections and to build friendships and support.

So why Network?

As business owners we need visibility…we want people to find out about what we offer and sell….and what value we add to our customers. So networking is a great way to do this.

As female business owners I believe we crave connection too so networking is a great facilitator for this and there is nothing like having a room full of energetic women to spark debate and creativity.

It benefits our mental health too, as we can meet like minded people who have the same challenges as us and to provide company and connection when working on our own.

I also think that some network for referrals and promotion and clearly this is a bi product of networking effectively however I would ask you to consider that if you are going purely to ‘sell stuff’ that you may not be as successful as you think you will be.  People buy people as they say!  You need to be in this for the long game.

What shall I look out for?

Energy – I would encourage you to ensure that the networking community has people with the same energy as you.  Will they spark creativity, conversations that challenge you and boost you or will then drain the life out of you.  This needs to be a positive experience

Organised – If you are spending 2/3 hours there then please make sure it is well organised and purposeful…not just a nice chat.  Consider attending this versus spending 2/3 hours selling or delivering to clients…is it a good investment of your time?

Added value – there are many networking events that are popping up with added value, like branded shots, coaching or additional free events.  There are great.  Also as a minimum there should be a way to connect outside of the events.

Tip Tips:

Go with Intention – what is your aim?  How many connections will you wish to make? What are you promoting today?

Go on brand.  Represent your company.  Look authentic and well polished.  No one is going to buy a disorganised business owner.

Prep – be confident in your message, your presentation and your pricing – please do not turn up and then be unable to tell people what you do and how much it is if they ask!

Be remembered – whether it’s the clothes you wear, your lipstick or a funny message you say – make sure people remember you.

After the meeting

I always follow and connect with people straight after the meeting and I remember things about them and check in with them.  Eg if someone said they had a bit presentation to a client the next day I may ask how it went etc.

Organise 1:1’s or online coffees if there is common ground – there is a caveat here…don’t do 1:1’s for the sake of them. No one wants to waste their precious time doing that!

Ask them if they would like to join your mailing list so that you can then create a touch point there.  Have a QR code on your phone so that people can scan it to get the link!

Lastly don’t be scared to leave a group when it stops ticking those boxes.  Move on and mix it up!
